I've personally never found Illustrator to be too great for line art. I don't think they simulate traditional inking tools too well. Have you experimented with a program called Manga Studio at all?

A buddy turned me onto it and I swear by it now. Lots of control over line-making tools, definitely great for more than just manga. The interface can take a little getting used to if you're more familiar with Adobe stuff, but its totally worth it!

That's pretty good for the first attempt with Illustrator. I love the profile in particular, and Photoshop doodles are really cool (are you using the graphic tablet for those).

I use Illustrator for my digital inking and find it to be a pretty good tool. Check out BRIAN ROMERO's ILLUSTRATOR INKING posts. Those helped me a ton.
Oh, and Happy birthday! I didn't have time to do something fun or funny so I went the artsy fartsy route with a portrait sketch. Hope you like, and have a good birthday.

Keep practicing with Illustrator. I hated it at first, but once you get used to how it works you'll see how useful it is for inking and coloring.
