Maximo & Bartola

Lately I have become a big fan of Human Marvels, the stories of these people and their lives are intriguing, and the visual reference knows no bounds! Unfortunately I think I've read every article there is to read. Sadness, ho!

Above is my caricature (but more realistic than you think) of a sister and brother who are microcephalic, which is more commonly known as being a "pinhead."

I love this photo!

Hey! Look at this cool sculpture that Jimi Lagattuta made based on a sketch I did for Sketch Theatre! Very cool, thanks!

I bet you are a fan of Todd Browning, too.

Lovely Sketches!
I went through a human marvels faze a few months ago. If you are short on reading material, I would suggest looking up sperm whales and the story of the Essex.

Thank YOU J. Tithonus Pednaud!!

Hey Meg Shaw- I totally had a bunch of sperm whale figures when I was a kid. One with it's babies, haha.

you're lucky that people sculpt your drawings for shits and gigs, and you weren't kidding about those caricatures being more realistic than we'd think.

I saw one of the micro cephalic people before, but I think they were in an old horror movie

What, no Johnny Eck?

Kali, Those 2 drawings are beautiful! So clean. Man, I followed that marvel link and wasted about 2 hours ( I'm gonna get fired) it's hard to look away from all that curious content!

Kali Fontecchio said...

I should do Johnny Eck! I don't have much time on my hands lately (I feel like I always say that, haha).

Thanks Patrick! Don't get fired, but definitely read more, ahaha.

Awesome!!

Dare I say that I think the pinheads were, maybe, the best part of Browning's Freaks?

gabba gabba one of us! one of us!

Yes, my first reaction was "FREAKS" as well.

Yikes. That ending still gives me the heebie jeebies. Not to mention the dwarf with the knife. Okay, I'm done thinking about this...

Hey, Kali, you should do a show where everyone looks exactly like Nico. Or at least Nico if he went through wildly different weight, race and sex fluctuations.

There'd be black Nico, asian Nico, pinhead Nico, Nico babies, dogs with human Nico faces, bald Nico, Nico bums, Nico CEOS and Nico priests.

I didn't come up with the idea, but I remembered someone told me that once.

Kali Fontecchio said...

You mean someone thought of this Nico idea before you knew of this Nico?

Jorge Garrido said...

No, it was on an internet chat, we were talking about how you always draw Nico. I thought it was a funny idea.

Great drawings! Really beautiful line work and great colors. Nice shadows too. Those beautiful pinheads remind me of Rosie the pinhead from the 1994 movie Freaked.

I find microcephalics really interesting myself! It was the movie Freaks that made me fall in love with them. I think they make great cartoon characters.
