Wow! This comic is phenomenal, Kali!
I'm a big fan of your blog. This looks like you put a lot of tender loving care into. I love how detailed every page is. Great job!

Beautiful and very cute comic. A lot of hard work went into this, so way to go Kali. That's my girl! <3

It's AMAZING! I am hoping one of the prints you are selling is the one where she's sad sitting next to the water. I love it!!! :)

Jorge Garrido said...

GREAT comic! I like how you made her feminine, in her poses and stuff, yet kind of androgynous at the same time.

"Beatles For Sale"... That's actually my favourite Beatles album!

Katie Regan said...

That was absolutely darling!

Your comic is adorable! Will we expect more in the future mayhap? :)

i really like it, kali. i feel like this sometimes, you're not alone. i wish duck pals were real!

Awesome! I love it! I want to see more...

My affection for Dumb Duck continues, and I love the expressions you gave him. QUACK!!!

I like it. Really nice color scheme. Bottom of page four is excellent and the stacked critters is great too. Well done, Kali.

Wonderful! Beautifully drawn, appealing but not overly cute, and an interesting, unique character. Nicely bridges the gap between comic pages and art prints.

You've got a great range of tastes and interests influencing your work, particularly for someone your age. They're all things I'm into as well, but I was there at the time (ok, maybe not with Buster Keaton, I'm not quite that old).

I'll admit I found your blog through your connection to John K, but You've got a distinctive voice of your own. I look forward to seeing where you go with it.

Is Maude strictly a "Moptop" era fan, or would she equally enjoy the White Album?

Hey, as I type this "I Should Have Known Better" just started playing on the radio here at work!

Good work. Nearly made me cry.

Woooow! You have an appealing, fun approach to things. What a treat!

Yes, wonderful, Kali!!! Dumb Dumb Duck shines in his performance!! You have made a great comic book with your hard work!

5/5 thumbs up!!!

Acck. I don't deserve any help credit. I always complain about people that can't look at a rough idea and see how good it's going to be. People with no imagination to make the leap to where I'm headed. I'm just as guilty. I had no idea from your roughs how cool this would finally look.
Special note on the color. You are great with color.
I think you are banking a lot of mastery at "cute." I noticed that was one of the hottest genres at the Con.
I'm looking forward to the next installments. Great work and congratulations on sticking with personal projects. It's the toughest kind of work. No one's paying you. But these projects ultimately pay off better than work projects.

That was really fun! I finished it right when the song ended, perfect timing!

So great. I read through all the pages, and that's saying a lot. I have the attention span of a gnat.

Beautifully done! Dumb Dumb Duck is wonderfully dumb, and I have a special place in my heart for that albino rabbit.

Really incredible drawings and detail work, I can't wait to see more!!

Trevor Thompson said...

Wait, the animals can't be her friend because they fell down? That's no fair!

I bet I know which joke John submitted!

Great comic, Kali! When does it hit the stands?

- trevor.

PS: Too bad that Beatles song didn't last the whole comic, that woulda been too cool, Daddy-O!

J Cola said...

Playing the song while reading the comic made the whole thing absolutely perfect. There are a lot of aspects into making a comic and you bring them all together very well.
I loved it!

Pedro Vargas said...

Cool comic, Kali! Love the colors. I like how she doesn't judge the first two guys at first and envisions them as Beatles people. Really fun stuff! Is she gonna teach some Beatles stuff to the duck in later comics? Will the duck dress like her and have Beatles hair like a Mini-Maude?

famulous said...

Kali - really love these! Awesome - keep it coming!

Benjamin Anders said...

That was a fun and enjoyable comic! Sad but Maude is so cute. Great job Kali! :)

Will you be doing more Maude comics?

yogan said...

Very clean drawings, congratulations (:

Joseff said...

Great comic! Beautiful colors! and the music ended just when i finished reading it, a new experience for me, great job! Very proffesional.

Zoran Taylor said...

Hooold on,
jorge - didn't you post an anti-Beatles rant on john's blog some moons ago? Or was that just an incredibly elaborate piece of sarcasm/satire?

This is beautiful. I know the lead is kind of a self-portrait, but does that version of yourself have a specific name? Does "Kali Kazoo" refer specifically to you as a mod within your own comics?

Kathy! said...

What a fun comic! I love the adorable baby owls and little tadpoles on the frog's back. I hope Dumb Dumb Duck is my pal, too. Plus the Beatles just make everything better.

Zoran Taylor said...

Oh wait - I guess she's called Maude Maucher.

CartoonSteve said...

Kali,

I love your comic style - even more than I love "Hate" (Peter Bagge). Keep up the great work!

Can i go live in your comic?

To everyone: THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy it was well-received!

Jason Anders: The print I am selling is her in panel 4 sitting by the water, but I made her happy and added Dumb Dumb Duck, so it'd be an upbeat print. :D

Jorge: I thought you hated them??? I hope I persuaded you at some point in time!

Nicholas Martinez: Yes I think there will be more, but probably never this many pages for one story, at least not on my blog.

JC Roberts: I think she is still in the Moptop era, I will go into her other obsession more, like early Bob Dylan. I won't say anything is definite though, people change sometimes.

Ellis: you were a big help! Don't sell yerself short!

Trevor: Haha, tell me which one!

Pedro: I think she is going to try, but we'll see how that works out...

Ben: I will be! I'm thinking about how I want to though.......maybe a monthly thing.....or every two weeks? Maybe weekly if people really wanted it!

Zoran: There's definitely stuff I draw from my own life in her, but I think I have a pretty good idea of who she is now, and she's a little more optimistic and fun than I am, haha.

NateBear: go right ahead! Haha, I wish I could too!

Kali! It's awesome! I love it (and can totally relate with her, haha). Page 7 is my favorite. You pulled it all together really well... line, color, staging. I'm really impressed and inspired!

Everything ROCKS!! Keep up the goos work I really dig dumb duck

Nico said...

just for the record- Maude Macher is not a cartoon persona of Kali. They have similar tastes, but they are two different people.

Zoran Taylor said...

I asked 'cause she looks just like you!

Mr Goodson said...

I recommend right-click saving the strip and putting it in a folder with the song. Browse the strip with your arrow keys vs the blog download.

The tadpoles are great on the back of the frog. It made me think of the potential Flash animation you could do morphing the tadpole shape around.

Lester Hunt said...

"Maybe I need to join a new species."

Love that line!

thomas said...

Nice to see you pushing your work even further. Nice work!

and the " I only hang out with other cutters" line is priceless.

Maude kind of seems like an older "Alice in Wonderland" type of character, in her 20's. Is the duck her white rabbit?

Trevor Thompson said...

Kali said: "Haha, tell me which one!"

My guess is JK submitted the joke about the black guy with the droopy pants who doesn't like music with melodies. That sounds a lot like one of his 'theories' about hip hop.

Makes for a great cartoon, though!

Shawn Dickinson said...

Hey, Kali Great comic!!!!

>>I bet I know which joke John submitted!<<

I'll bet it's the part where the slimy frog spores stick their heads out of the mother frog's back-holes and all agree that they love The Beatles.

Waqas Malik said...

aww Maude is so cute, i wud love to be her boyfriend! ♥♥ those too guys dont know what there missing. its cool that she like mobtop music. does she like The Who as well? that wud be great! :)

Mitch K said...

I love ducks and I love frogs. You win! Great comic. :D

Ken Mitchroney said...

Well done Kali! You are on the path to independent comic greatness.

Mr. Semaj said...

Hey Kali. Nice comic. I kept thinking Maude was some kind of self-portrait. She's looking to become an interesting new comic character.

Tim DeMoor said...

Wow, this has so many layers of awesome, I wouldn't even know where to properly begin! Your artwork's absolutely gorgeous (I've been studying some of your work on John K.'s site), and your obvious love of The Beatles is just great ("Beatles For Sale" is one of my favs, too). Wonderful comic! =)
